Bel Canto was the classical Italian style of singing of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The name was chosen by the singers because its literal translation - beautiful song - expresses their aspirations admirably. Bel Canto was formed in late 1995, and has been received enthusiastically everywhere it has appeared. It has performed five times at the same venue, and one concert raised over 1100 pounds for a church restoration fund.

The Group were all members of Opera Experience, a teaching company formed to provide opportunities for new singers to perform under conditions as near as possible to professional opera. Many of the company were young professional singers at the start of their careers. Bel Canto offers its audiences a wide range of music, from operatic arias, lieder and arie antiche (preferably sung in the original language), through ballads and songs from musical shows, to the humour of cabaret, character and comic music-hall songs. There are even a few jazz arrangements of ‘classic pop’ songs! Most of the repertoire is chosen for its musical quality - beautiful songs indeed - although some of the humorous songs have sneaked in purely on their amusement value!

Bel Canto performances are normally restricted to venues which can be reached in two hours from Peterborough.
