The Journal of the

Canine Universal Nature Training Society

Many years ago some neighbours who had become my good friends persuaded me to give up 'doing things around the house' and go walking with them on Sunday mornings.

One of them, 'J', wrote a weekly article about beer for a local newspaper, and often used the walks as a source of material. He adopted the style of Jerome K. Jerome in his famous book, 'Three Men in a Boat', and to preserve the anonymity of the walkers, he gave us pseudonyms, starting with 'George' and 'Harris'. He also coined the Society's name, on the basis that we used 'walking the dog' as an excuse to be at the pub door at opening time (then 12 noon).

All the members had very demanding professions, so Sunday mornings became a wonderful time to 'let off steam', and our behaviour was the antithesis of our workaday responsibilities.

Eventually I realised that I was having 'the Time of my Life' on our excursions, and so I began to record them afterwards in the pub, for I thought, "One day something will change, and things will never be the same again."

As we walked along the sea wall our shadows walked with us; once we had noticed them they started to do exotic things.

Extract from Sunday, 15th January, 1978:

In his Master's steps he trod,
Where his feet had slither'd.
Cursing when the silly sod
Lost his way and dithered.

George and Harris, on they went,
Legs and arms a-flailing.
Breaking wind with mock lament
Due to their wassailing.

George had to leave the walk early to attend a posh cocktail party . . . .

 The Farmers' Song

We plough the fields and scatter
The walkers from their path.
It doesn't seem to matter -
We do not fear their wrath!
We make them crawl through hedgerows
To get round our estates;
No matter where the path goes
We still will lock our gates.

Fonts: The original journals were, of course, longhand, and I have used 'script' fonts to prepare this, giving the impression of handwriting. I also used different fonts for different contributors.

Click on each font you do not already have to download it. You will then need to install them before you can view this Journal as I transcribed it. You can find how to do this by clicking on Windows 'Help'.
